Responsible Driving Tips
- 1/26If driving in busy urban or pedestrian-heavy areas
Maintain continuous observation of the road ahead and surrounding areas, especially in environments with high pedestrian or cyclist activity, to detect hazards in time to respond safely.
When preparing to turn, brake, change lanes, or reverse
Use all mirrors regularly to monitor blind spots and surrounding traffic, paying particular attention before any manoeuvre to ensure it can be completed safely.
To match speed with conditions
Always travel at a safe speed that reflects the road type, visibility, weather, and vehicle load. Never exceed the legal limit for your vehicle category.
If following another vehicle
Maintain a greater following distance in larger vehicles, as they require longer stopping distances, especially when fully loaded.
When slowing or stopping a heavy vehicle
Anticipate braking needs in advance, use engine braking where possible, and avoid harsh brake application to maintain stability and reduce wear.
If making a turn in a large vehicle
Make wider, controlled turns to prevent cutting corners and to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby vehicles from danger.
To minimise blind spot risks
Understand your vehicle extended blind spots and use mirrors, careful positioning, and early signalling to warn others before manoeuvres.
If carrying cargo
Ensure that all goods are firmly restrained to prevent movement or shifting during transit, which could cause instability, accidents, or loss of control.
When driving in rain, fog, or snow
Reduce speed, maintain a larger following distance, and use appropriate lighting to improve visibility and safety in poor weather conditions.
If feeling tired while driving
Take legally required breaks, avoid driving when fatigued, and plan journeys to include adequate rest periods to maintain concentration and reaction time.
When sharing the road with smaller vehicles and vulnerable users
Allow extra room for cyclists and pedestrians, overtake only when safe, and be patient in congested or narrow road conditions.
If faced with a breakdown or emergency
Pull over in a safe location, activate hazard lights, secure the vehicle, and follow procedures to protect yourself and other road users.
To meet legal driving requirements
Adhere to tachograph and working hour regulations, licensing conditions, and alcohol and drug laws to remain compliant and safe.
When reversing a large vehicle
Avoid reversing unless unavoidable. Use a guide or banksman if available, check all mirrors, and proceed slowly with extreme caution.
If approaching a junction in a large vehicle
Slow down early, check mirrors, and be ready to stop safely, allowing extra time for the size and weight of your vehicle.
When descending a long or steep hill
Select an appropriate lower gear before descending to avoid overheating brakes and maintain vehicle control.
If approaching a pedestrian crossing
Reduce speed, watch for pedestrians, and stop if necessary, remembering larger vehicles take longer to halt.
When overtaking cyclists or motorcyclists
Allow at least 1.5 metres when passing at speeds up to 30 mph and more space at higher speeds to ensure safety.
If parking a heavy goods vehicle
Choose a safe location, apply the parking brake, and ensure the vehicle does not block traffic or pedestrian access.
When entering a roundabout
Approach in the correct lane, signal intentions clearly, and give priority to traffic from the right unless signs indicate otherwise.
To save fuel and reduce wear
Avoid unnecessary acceleration, maintain steady speeds, and anticipate traffic flow to reduce fuel consumption and mechanical strain.
When joining a motorway or dual carriageway
Use the slip road to build up speed, check mirrors, and join traffic without causing other vehicles to brake or swerve.
If carrying hazardous materials
Ensure proper documentation, correct labelling, and secure storage of dangerous goods in compliance with transport safety laws.
When using a tachograph
Operate the tachograph correctly to log driving hours, breaks, and rest times to comply with EU/UK working time laws.
If stopped by enforcement officers
Cooperate fully, present licence, CPC card, and tachograph records, and follow legal requirements during checks.
When operating in restricted zones
Comply with low-emission zone requirements, weight restrictions, and delivery time limits to avoid fines and ensure legal operation.
