Conduct a complete walkaround of the vehicle and trailer before starting the journey, checking all safety-critical parts to ensure they are in proper working order.
When checking brakes
Test the service and parking brakes to confirm they operate smoothly and can stop the vehicle safely.
If inspecting tyres
Inspect each tyre for correct inflation, sufficient tread depth, and absence of cuts, bulges, or damage.
When checking wheels
Check that all wheel nuts are present, tightened correctly, and free from signs of loosening.
If inspecting mirrors
Make sure mirrors are undamaged, clean, and properly adjusted for maximum visibility.
When checking windscreen
Check windscreen and side windows for cracks, chips, or obstructions to clear vision.
If testing lights
Test all external lights, including brake, indicator, and hazard lights, to ensure proper operation.
When inspecting reflectors
Clean all reflectors and confirm they are securely fitted and unobstructed.
If inspecting load security
Check that the load is firmly restrained, evenly distributed, and within permitted limits.
When checking doors and access points
Confirm that all doors, tailgates, and hatches open, close, and lock correctly.
If inspecting bodywork
Identify any damaged or insecure parts of the body that may pose a safety hazard.
When checking fuel level
Make sure the fuel tank has sufficient fuel and that the cap is secure.
If inspecting fuel system
Look around and beneath the vehicle for signs of fuel leakage or damage to the system.
When checking exhaust system
Inspect for loose parts, holes, or excessive smoke emissions.
If inspecting suspension
Look for broken springs, worn shock absorbers, or other visible suspension faults.
When checking steering
Test steering movement to confirm there is no excessive play or stiffness.
If inspecting horn
Operate the horn to verify it works effectively for warning other road users.
When checking seatbelts
Pull seatbelts to check they lock properly, retract smoothly, and are free from fraying.
If inspecting dashboard warning lights
Turn on the ignition to check all warning lights illuminate and go out as expected.
When checking windscreen washer system
Ensure the washer reservoir is topped up and the spray pattern works correctly.
If inspecting coolant system
Check coolant reservoir and radiator for correct levels and absence of leaks.
When checking oil level
Use the dipstick to check oil level and top up if necessary.
If inspecting battery
Confirm the battery is firmly fixed, terminals are clean, and connections are secure.
When inspecting trailer coupling
Check that the trailer is properly coupled, locked, and that safety devices are connected.
If inspecting air system (for air brakes)
Wait for the air system to reach correct pressure and listen for air leaks.
When checking warning equipment
Confirm that warning triangles, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits are on board and ready for use.
If testing windscreen wipers
Operate wipers to ensure they move freely and clear the glass effectively.
When inspecting registration plates
Check that plates are secure, legible, and free from dirt or damage.
If completing the inspection record
Log any faults found and report them before operating the vehicle.
