Theory test Guidelines 

The theory test is done on a computer and made easy to use. Here’s how it goes:

The separate category C and D tests have 100 questions with multiple choices. To pass, you need to get at least 74 of them right.

The combined category C and D test has 140 questions with multiple choices. To pass, you need to get at least 104 of them right.

To prepare for the theory test, studying and memorising the Rules of the Road is important. If you need help, you can also consult a certified Driver CPC trainer. Various official learning materials are available in print, digital and online formats. Additionally, you can practice with the authorized questions and answers to improve your chances of passing the test.

In Ireland, a special organisation called the Road Safety Authority (RSA) tests people who want to drive. You must pass their driving test to get a full Irish driving license.

Learning how to drive and passing this test is a big deal. But, taking the test can make some people feel nervous or worried.

Who Needs to Take the Theory Test:

Anyone applying for a first-time learner permit for a car (Category B), motorcycle (Category A), or work vehicle (Category W) must pass the Theory Test before they can begin learning to drive.

3. Booking the Theory Test:

You can book your Theory Test online via the official RSA website or by phone.

4. Theory Test Categories:

The Theory Test is available for several categories of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, and agricultural vehicles. Choosing the category matching the learner permit or license you are applying for would be best.

5. Test Format:

The Theory Test consists of a multiple-choice portion and a hazard perception test. I will ensure the text is free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. I will provide no grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. It’s taken on a computer at a designated test centre.

6. Multiple-Choice Questions:

You will answer multiple-choice questions about road safety and rules. To pass, you need to answer at least 35 out of 40 questions correctly.

7. Hazard Perception Test:

During the hazard perception test, you will be presented with video clips that depict different driving scenarios. Your task is to identify potential hazards and react appropriately by clicking a mouse button. The faster you respond to a developing risk, the higher your score.

8. Passing the Test:

In order to pass the Theory Test, one must achieve passing scores in both the multiple-choice questions and hazard perception test during the same examination.

9. Study Materials:

To prepare for the Theory Test, you should study the “Rules of the Road” book, which is available for purchase or can be downloaded for free from the RSA website. Official practice questions and mock tests can be found on the RSA website.

10. Test Fee:

– A fee for taking the Theory Test varies depending on the test category.

11. Test Results:

– After completing the Theory Test, you will receive your results immediately. If you pass, you will receive a Theory Test Certificate, which you will need when applying for a learner permit or full driving license.

12. Validity:

-Your Theory Test Certificate remains valid for two years starting from the date you passed the test. Please note that this revised version should have no spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors. You must obtain your learner permit or driving license within this time frame.

While taking the Test:

The test is fully computerised and can be taken using a touch screen, mouse, or keyboard. You do not need to have computer knowledge to attempt a theory test.

The test begins with a short lesson where they show you how to use the test and let you try answering two questions.

The test consists of multiple-choice questions. Each answer has a square box beside it. To choose your answer, tick the box next to it.

You can cancel your answer if you make a mistake or change your mind. You can skip questions, review, and change your answers before finishing your test.

Motorcycle and car tests

For motorcycle and car tests, there are 40 questions you need to answer. To pass, you must get at least 35 of them right. You have 45 minutes to answer all 40 questions during the test. You can learn more about this in the theory test materials.

For Truck & bus tests

In the category C and D tests, you’ll find 100 questions. To pass, you need to get 74 of them right. You have 100 minutes to answer all the questions.

To pass the CD theory test, you must correctly answer 104 out of 140 questions in 140 minutes. To successfully During the truck (TMT) or bus (BMT) module theory test, you must correctly answer 30 out of 40 questions in 45 minutes.
